The Swanhurst Chorus
The Mission of Swanhurst Chorus is to:
Provide local amateur singers of all ages and experience with an opportunity to develop their talents and broaden their musical exposure through working on and performing great choral works under the direction of an accomplished and knowledgeable director.
- Perform within the Rhode Island community, often in collaboration with other area musicians
- Abet, expose, and develop the choral and other musical arts for the benefit of the public at large through performance and education.
Swanhurst Chorus holds the distinction of being Rhode Island’s longest continually performing choral ensemble, having just celebrated its 87th season. The Chorus ranks among the oldest organizations of its kind in New England and the country.
Some gems from Swanhurst’s history include, among others,
Puccini’s Messa di Gloria,
J.S. Bach’s Magnificat and Johannespassion,
The Mozart Requiem,
Horatio Parker’s Hora Novissima,
antiphonal works of the Gabrielli’s and Monteverdi, and
Copland’s Canticle of Freedom.
The Swanhurst Chamber Singers frequently sing at area nursing homes and for the Rotary Club at Christmas time, as well as for various functions of the New York Yacht Club throughout the year.
The group has also successfully offered 14 full scale Broadway productions in a Dinner Theater format - - these shows have become a fixture in the March calendar for Newport Country with sell-outs every year.
NEW SINGERS WELCOME! Swanhurst rehearses every Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, with members asked to attend one session per week. Rehearsals are held at St. Lucy’s Church on West Main Road in Middletown (across from Staples).
